The role of parents in a stuttering child’s life can play a major part in how the child will be in future. It not only affects the behavior of the child but can also affect the chance of recovery from the problem. But sometimes even though the parents do everything in their might to help the child, there is no significant improvement in the child. This may force them to lose hope and give up. This should be avoided and parents must seek to help the child in other ways possible to recover from the problem.
The difficulty faced by most parents is in dealing with the problem. Once the parents realize their child’s problem, they do not find the right way to go about it even though they are willing to put in all efforts. The first thing parents must do is to find a speech therapist or pathologist who can diagnose the child and confirm that the child is indeed suffering from stuttering. Once he does this, he tries to treat the child with his own methods. While most cases of stuttering terminate with the help of a speech pathologist, there are some cases which don’t.
When the stuttering problem at hand seems harder, the parents can approach one of the numerous specialist centers and organizations which are working for the benefit of stuttering children. While helping with the stuttering problem of the child, some centers also take up the financial charges of the treatment if parents are unable to take it up. In some cases parents are unable to spend time with the treatment of their stuttering children due to personal or other reasons and at such junctures, carers can be recruited by them to aid the child in the treatment in lieu of the parents. Carers can be requested either through the centers or through other voluntary organizations.
While a child is undergoing treatment from a therapist and when parents are helping the child with it, they can join mailing lists or support groups through which they can share their experiences and suggestions. Since in such groups the participants are all parents or carers of stuttering children, in addition to having a personal touch to the experiences, exposure to various medications and information on new treatments are also at heir disposal. Support groups can also advertise the cause of stutterers and advocate tolerance in the society towards stutterers.
